Here in the next few weeks we will be delivering turkeys to the Reservations for Thanksgiving. Donations are still coming in but it looks like we will be able to deliver the 1500 turkeys we had hoped on distributing. Once again this would not have been possible without our generous donors like you. We have also been able to acquire quite a few truckloads of produce which included lettuce, potatoes, apples, pears, squash and onions.
My plea to you today is to help NAHA feed the children, women, men and elderly on the Reservations, a nourishing, traditional holiday meal. Without your help they could face a bleak and hungry Christmas Day. We have talked to leaders from 30 to 35 communities on the Reservations and they’re all hoping that NAHA will be able to provide turkey dinners for their people at Christmas, just like we did for Thanksgiving.
We know if we buy in bulk we can get a 10-12 pound turkey plus all the trimmings like stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, butter and bread for $18. That will feed a family of five or six people. A meal like that could be just what it takes to keep a little child or an elderly grandmother or grandfather healthy enough to fend off illness. Of course any amount helps but for $36 you could provide a “Christmas Feast” for two families, $90 to feed five families or anything in between. We’re hoping with your generous support, this will be a Christmas where no one has to go to bed hungry on the Reservations.
Don’t forget we are still collecting toys for the children and teens on the Reservations. If you have a toy or game that is in gently-used condition please send it to: NAHA 12085 Quaal Rd., Black Hawk, SD 57718. Some examples of toys to send in would be: baby dolls, board games, toy trucks or cars, action figures, arts and crafts, barbies, sports equipment such as basketballs, footballs, etc., puzzles, baby toys, etc.
