Oct 2012 Newsletter

This month we were able to deliver truckloads of Wal-Mart product to the Reservations which consisted of toilet paper, paper towels, personal hygiene items, bedding, blankets, etc. We distributed emergency vouchers so they could purchase fuel for their homes for the long, cold, brutal months ahead. Words can’t express how grateful they were when we handed them their vouchers and again none of this could have happened without the generous contributions from our caring donors. NAHA also delivered various food products such as potatoes and yogurt and different types of drinks to the Reservations.

Can you believe that it is autumn already? The leaves are starting to change and pretty soon the trees will be bare. For most of us autumn means cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery but for the Reservations it means brisk, cold temperatures and snow. See, winter usually starts for them in September and will last through May. Their struggles are even tougher during the winter when whipping winds cut through the paper thin walls of their homes and at the end of each month when food runs out.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and for many of us it means a nice hot meal with our family and friends. For Native Americans living on the Reservations in South Dakota it means they might be lucky to have a loaf of bread and cheese at the dinner table. That’s why I am counting on you to understand the urgent need to help put Thanksgiving turkeys on the table for many Native American families. We will be able to purchase the turkeys in bulk but it will still take a large sum of money to do this. We want to be able to get 1,500 turkeys or more and deliver them before Thanksgiving arrives. We need all the help we can get so any amount you can afford will be much appreciated. They will also be able to take the leftovers from the turkey and make soup which will give them many meals days after. We have a day for giving thanks, wouldn’t it be great to have a day for giving back? Let’s make today that day!

We are also taking toy donations for all age groups to get ready for Christmas. You may send them to: NAHA, 12085 Quaal Rd., Black Hawk, SD 57718. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!!
