September 2013 Newsletter

It is the beginning of a long brutal winter and we have been very fortunate to be able to provide the Reservations we serve with a truckload of fresh picked corn on the cob, clothing, paper towels, toilet paper, blankets, bedding, diapers, etc. We just acquired 7 truckloads of Tempur Pedic mattresses that varied from twin, queen and king sizes. This will help the families who have to sleep on the cold, hard, dirty floor or a family of 6 that all have to share the same bed. Every person should be able to have their own bed to sleep on but this is far from the case on the Reservations. The Tempur Pedic mattresses are a god send. When they are placed on the cold, un-insulated floors they do not allow the cold to permeate. We can’t provide a bed for every single person but we can make sure everyone has a place to sleep.

As we all know Thanksgiving is just a few short months away which means we need to start preparing now to get the funds together to purchase turkeys for the families on the Reservations. Many families have experienced the same cruel situation every year, sitting down at their table on Thanksgiving Day with no food to share but maybe some bread and water. I am afraid this will happen again this year unless you and other caring supporters of NAHA answer this urgent request to help purchase 1,500 turkeys to the families in need. For 20 years we have purchased and delivered turkeys to the Reservations and made Thanksgiving happy for thousands of Sioux families in need. We want to continue this good deed but we need the help and support of our caring and generous donors like you.

It’s important that you respond both quickly and generously for two reasons:

1) Even though NAHA purchases turkeys in bulk-allowing us to stretch our dollars much farther than an individual could at a grocery store- it still takes a large sum of money to buy 1,500 turkeys.

2) Buying that many turkeys and getting them to the families in remote parts of the Reservations we serve takes several weeks.

Your urgent response is requested immediately.  Please send in whatever you can manage to help purchase turkeys and make Thanksgiving 2013 a Happy Thanksgiving for families that constantly struggle to keep food on their tables. We want to help as many families as we can so again, please send your contribution in today so we can get started on purchasing and delivering turkeys to the Reservations in South Dakota. From NAHA, we wish you and your family a joyous Thanksgiving Day!!!

  1. Mr. David Myers,

Thank you for starting such a charity as NAHA. I like the statistics being quoted in Charity Navigator too, especially compared to AIRC.

I would be interested to know what relationship AIRC has with NAHA? AIRC got a lot of bad press but I recently made a promised contribution. I now regret the contribution thinking NAHA would have been the preferred recipient. Is it possible to request they send the contribution to NAHA instead?

    Thank you.
I have been to Pine Ridge and driven through the area. Surely more industry can be brought into the area, but I wonder which one(s)? I recall a new college being built but don’t recall which community. Are more schools needed?
Thanks for the courtesy of a reply.
    Bruce

    1. Bruce- Thank you for such a kind and wonderful comment about our organization. We have worked very hard over the past 20 years and we appreciate when our donors acknowledge our work. In reality, none of this would be possible without our caring and generous donors like yourself. We have had a 4-star rating with Charity Navigator for 9 years and again we have worked hard for that and our proud to have such a high rating for our fiscally sound business.

We are not connected or associated with AIRC or any other non-profits. I don’t know if they would send the contribution you sent them to us or not. Especially if they don’t have a very good reputation right now. I would suggest that you could stop payment on the donation you sent but then I don’t know if you have to pay a fee to do that or you could call them and talk to someone about it. I wish I had another suggestion but I just really doubt they will turn around and send it to us.

As far as more industry being brought into the area its kind of a tough situation because all the Reservations are about 3 hours from anything. I think it would be very beneficial for them to have industry brought into their area but it’s probably more to it then saying yes lets build. Yes I think more schools are needed just like any other area. Population grows which means more facilitation needed for the children or even the elderly. I haven’t heard of any issues as far as schools being over crowded but that doesn’t mean they aren’t. I hope I answered your questions thoroughly and if you need anything else or have any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact us. Have a wonderful day!
