"...Thank you for your generous donation of $10,000 to assist in our desperate needs of propane and electricity. This has been a very cold month with freezing temperatures and winds of 55 miles per hour..."

Emergency Voucher – August Newsletter

We need your immediate help in the form of a generous donation to give more struggling families the vouchers they urgently need to make it through another bitterly cold South Dakota winter. NAHA’s Emergency Voucher program allows cold and hungry Native American families to purchase food for their children, heat their homes during the bitterly cold winter months and care for their ailing elders. I cannot keep up with the rising demand for vouchers for essential items like food, clothing and propane for heating stoves. On average, our Emergency Voucher program provides $15,000 worth of vouchers per month – an impressive accomplishment that’s made possible by the support of friends like you.

The pressing need for NAHA vouchers is made clear by just a few of the harsh realities of reservation life:
* Over 70% unemployment;
* Not enough food to last through the end of the month;
* Ramshackle housing with little or no insulation to ward off the cold;
* No money to buy medicine or gasoline to run emergency errands; and,
* Threadbare clothing that gives little protection against biting blizzard
winds.

Such terrible conditions help explain why the normal life expectancy on the reservation is only 58 years of age, as well as why your support of our Emergency Voucher program is so urgently needed.  Our Emergency Vouchers are as good as cash at grocery stores, fuel depots and other merchants because NAHA supporters like you back them up with your generosity.  That’s why I am counting on you to help raise our $15,000 monthly expenditures on vouchers  up  to  at  least  $50,000 – the amount needed to help spare reservation families horrible suffering this winter!

Any size gift you send today will help provide NAHA Emergency Vouchers for Native American elders, families and children who are hungry, cold, sick and despairing that their suffering will have no end.  Remember that 92% of all revenue goes towards helping the Native Americans in need.

2 out of 10 Native American Households are Hungry!

Every 1 in 6 children live below the federal poverty line in South Dakota, 30% more Native Americans have high blood pressure and 20% are more likely to have heart disease than any other group of the general population. With statistics like these, is it any wonder that the average life expectancy of Native Americans is only 58 years old?

NAHA DELIVERS FOOD

Access to nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains and healthy proteins and the lack of money to buy these foods are the main reasons for such heart-breaking statistics.

Native American Heritage Association, with the support of our generous donors, provides emergency food supplies to the Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations. Crow Creek and Pine Ridge Reservations are 2 of the poorest counties in America with a per capita income of $5,213.00. Unbelievable that in 2010, people in the United States live in conditions comparable to third world countries!!

In 2009, NAHA was able to distribute 3,183,475 pounds of food. We work with Feeding America, formerly America’s Second Harvest, to procure the food that we deliver to the Reservations. Our fee expenses for the food last year was 4 cents per pound plus the labor and fuel to deliver it. It would be nice to pay 4 cents per pound at your grocery store, but that isn’t going to happen. Although 3,183,475 pounds sounds like a lot of food – and it is – for the 90,000 people on the Reservations we serve, it averaged out in 2009 to 3 pounds per person per month.

But you can help us make a difference and increase the amount of food that we buy and deliver. Call or Click Now to make your donation to our Food Program.

For only $28.00, we can provide 700 pounds of food or $56.00 will get 1,400 pounds of food. Don’t let another minute pass or another child go to bed hungry. Act now to help a Native American family in need.

Follow the link to donate by credit card, electronic funds transfer through our safe and secure website or we offer you a choice of donating through Paypal or Amazon.

However you choose to donate, please don’t delay!!!

Rush your tax-deductible contribution to NAHA today and help put food on the tables of the Native American families that need it the most!!!

Project Preserve & 6th Consecutive 4-Star Rating

Native American Heritage Association is proud to announce that we have received our 6th consecutive 4 star rating with Charity Navigator. We are the only Native American organization with this rating for that length of time. Without the generosity of supporters like you, many of our programs would not be possible. Thank you for everything you do to help the many Native American families in need. Please read on and you will see how NAHA puts your money to work.

While the economy is on the decline, hunger is on the rise for many elders and families with children. Parents struggle to put food on the table and rely heavily on their children receiving breakfast and lunch at school. But what happens on the weekends when the children are out of school? Sadly, many children go hungry or have very little food until they return to school on Monday. The same is true for many of the elders that eat at the senior centers when staff is off on the weekends.

NAHA, in partnership with Feeding America, (formerly America’s Second Harvest), has been offered to participate for the third time in the “Project Preserve” program. “Project Preserve” is a program designed to give hungry children in school a backpack at the end of the day on Friday filled with nutritional food so that they will have something to eat over the weekend. When they return to school on Monday, they will again be fed at school. The same would be done for the elders at the senior centers.

With your help today, we can get the program going and hopefully accrue enough funds by next fall to run the entire school year. To feed one child amounts to $5.25 per week – to adopt a whole class amounts to $105.00 per month. Please join NAHA today to help underprivileged children. Hunger doesn’t take a vacation – so ACT NOW!!!

The choice is yours – you can make a one-time donation to help us get the program started or something more permanent by becoming a monthly donor. You have the option to make your donation by credit or debit card, electronic funds transfer from your checking account or simply mailing a check or money order to NAHA. Whatever way you choose to make your donation, DON’T DELAY. DONATE NOW to help a child or elder. And remember 92.4% of all revenue goes towards our program services.

PLEASE HELP US NOW! Thank you all for your donations and support.

2010 Blizzards are Gone, But Bone-Chilling Cold Remains

The Blizzards Are Gone But The Cold Remains

This winter, Mother Nature has wreaked havoc on the Reservations of South Dakota. Snowstorm after snowstorm and ferocious winds have snapped power lines leaving many stranded without heat, water or food for several weeks. Kidney dialysis patients have had to be evacuated to Rapid City, South Dakota for their life-saving treatments. The storms have left even the most prepared Native American families stranded wondering how propane and electric companies will get to them to restore electricity and deliver much needed propane.

In light of the fact that winter is normally a busy and demanding time for NAHA, many people have come to our aid to help with this emergency situation. We would like to thank the DAILY KOS website and Keith Olbermann for their concern and support during this trying time.

Without this much needed support, we wouldn’t have been able to help as many families as we have with propane and emergency food supplies. NAHA is grateful to have such kind and generous donors.

With the THREE blizzards that occurred during the last week of April and into the first two weeks of May 2009, we are all too familiar with how long winter lasts in South Dakota. We are, therefore, continuing our heating assistance program.

Donate NOW to make sure we have funds readily available to continue helping the Native American families in need. With Easter approaching, NAHA will try to provide Easter dinners to the families that so desperately need a respite after this dismal winter.

Please Donate NOW to help us with this effort!!!

Without your help, we cannot make these programs possible.

Emergency Relief for Those Without Heat

Emergency Need For Those Without Warmth Or Heat!

Relief efforts needed on the Reservations of South Dakota

For several weeks, the Reservations of South Dakota have been hit with severe weather conditions. Blizzards and whiteout conditions have hampered efforts to get propane and heat to the many Native American families that so desperately need it.

That being said, we have received EMERGENCY requests from the Presidents of the Tribal Offices for propane assistance. With such extreme conditions, families are running out of propane more rapidly with temperatures plunging to -33 degrees below zero and daytime highs, without wind chills, at – 18 below zero… and families don’t have the money to fill their propane tanks. The average cost to fill one family’s propane tank is around $250.00. We need several donations of $25, $50, $100 or more to help fill as many families’ propane tanks as possible.

With the tragic earthquake in Haiti, we know many people are directing their support to the poor people there. However, with such extreme weather conditions occurring right here in the United States, we are pleading for people to help NAHA with this EMERGENCY.

Please act now to help us help the many families RIGHT NOW that so desperately need heat. We are not asking you to do this alone. With your donation of $25, $50, $100 or more, we can combine this with other donations that we receive to help as many people as possible.

Act  NOW — don’t delay in sending your donation today. Call or Click right now to make your donation. We offer payment via credit card, electronic funds transfer from your checking account or by PayPal or Amazon payments. Please don’t delay in helping provide the gift of WARMTH to a Native American family in need.

Also, in partnership with Capital One, NAHA now has our own credit card. Apply at www.cardlabconnect.com/NAHA and receive our credit card that comes with a fixed, low rate, no annual fee and with your first purchase, NAHA will receive a $25 donation from Capital One and we will receive an additional 1% of your total yearly purchases. Apply TODAY, as new credit card laws take effect on February 22, 2010.

End of Tax Year 2009

“Make Your Charity Donations Count Now.” – End Of Tax Year 2009!

Save $ In Taxes & NAHA Today by Making an IRS Tax Deductible Donations By Today, Dec. 31st 2009.

Here are some simple money-saving tips why Charities like NAHA can you help you, by helping us.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday season this year! NAHA was able to deliver Food, clothing, and living-supplies this holiday to all 4 Reservations we serve. Thank you to everyone for helping NAHA care for the Native American families that are in dire need of your’s and our help. NAHA is still in dire need of charity donations this year, to help meet our goals to feed, clothe, supply medicine, provide backpacks, school supplies and more to families that just cannot provide themselves the help that they so desperately need. Today is the last day of the Tax Year 2009, and we would like to provide you some TAX-SAVING ideas why charities like ours can use your help, and why donating to a 4-Star Charity (501(c)(3)
can benefit your wallet.

Both 2008 and 2009 have been very hard years for all charities, including NAHA. At the same time that more and more individuals are seeking charitable help for the first time. Let’s face it; even those of us with jobs have found ourselves scrimping more, perhaps running out of money at the end of the month, or cutting back on luxury items that used to be a mainstay in our households. Maybe this year there has been a salary freeze at your job, or you will not be receiving a bonus that you counted on.

Basically, there are 3 reasons to give to NAHA: The first is because you would like a tax break. Why give Uncle Sam money when you could instead give some of that money to a charity that supports or helps a cause that is worthy, and helps children and families in need? The second is because you genuinely want to help out our cause. Either way will yield you a tax savings, and help the growing deficit many charities are facing. The third reason is because we need your help, sometimes just asking for your help is all it takes, and we know how hard it is for the families that have nothing, and know that even $5.00 will make a difference to a child who doesn’t know when they will eat their next meal.

Figuring out your tax savings is simple. Find out what your income tax bracket is for 2009. Each dollar that you contribute (either in cash or in market value of goods donated) will yield you a tax savings of your income tax bracket. For example, if you are in the 25% income tax bracket, then your tax savings is 25% of your contribution amount (for $100, that would be $25 in tax savings).

Timing: Deadline is December 31, 2009

Tax deductions may be made in the tax year that the actual money or goods were donated. So you have until December 31, 2009 to take advantage of IRS tax deductions for this year. If you want to donate money, but do not have it right now, then you can charge that money on your credit card, and you can still take the donated money as a tax contribution in this year.

Special Charitable Contributions for Certain IRA Owners: IRS

This provision, currently scheduled to expire on DEC. 31, 2009, offers older owners of individual retirement accounts (IRAs) a different way to give to charity. An IRA owner, age 70½ or over, can directly transfer tax-free up to $100,000 per year to an eligible charity. NAHA is able to accept IRA, Bequest, & Corporate Donations with the tax-deductibilty at the highest level allowed by law, and you will be provided a receipt for all donations. If you are in interested in making a IRA contributions please call 540-636-1020 and ask for Susan Showers.

With your support and help, we can help others that are in need. We really appreciate the support of our donors, and members. We want to thank you all for your support in 2009, and want to express our gratitude for your generosity and kindness, the children, mothers, and fathers of families believe in NAHA, and believe in you, because without your support, there would be no ability to help these families living in distress. Please consider even making a $5, $10, or $50 donation today, we can accept donations as high as you wish to make, make this TAX year count for you and for those who need your help!

Please CLICK HERE NOW to make a tax deductible donation.

We also accept clothing or Toys. Please Ship any New or Outgrown Toys to NAHA, 12085 Quaal Rd., Black Hawk, SD 57718.

Every 3 or 4 days in South Dakota, someone dies by suicide

Every 3 or 4 days in South Dakota someone dies by suicide…

What a heartbreaking but true fact. Native American youths have the highest rate of suicide of any group in the Nation. And, it’s no wonder – they live where unemployment rates are as high as 75%, money is very scarce and so are basic life necessities like food, clothing and heat. There is no money for toys, cd players or trips to the movies.

Native American Heritage Association, with the help of our generous donors, helps provide food, clothing and heating assistance. But with the holidays fast approaching, we would like to bring happiness to the children for one day by providing toys for Christmas. You can help us do this!!! Think how disappointed your own children or grandchildren would be to wake up Christmas morning and didn’t have even ONE gift to open. That is how it is for many of the Native American children on Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Lower Brule and Crow Creek Reservations in South Dakota.

But you can make a difference NOW! For several years, NAHA has been collecting toys to distribute to the Reservations. We would like to make this our most successful year ever. Please help us now with the NAHA Christmas Toy Program. All you have to do is collect new or used toys and ship them unwrapped to NAHA, 12085 Quaal Rd., Black Hawk, SD 57718. Also, you could ask your church or civic organization to conduct a toy drive or help pay shipping costs. Please forward this email to as many of your friends and family as possible to see if they have any toys that still have hours of play that a Native American child would treasure.

Also, with the teenagers having the highest suicide rate, let’s not forget them. Please send cd players, cds, watches, costume jewelry, Playstation games, anything that a teenage boy or girl would use and appreciate. We know this can make a difference to so many people. If you’re unable to send a toy or two, you can make a tax-deductible contribution to our NAHA Christmas Dinner program. $18 will feed a family of five Christmas Dinner, $36 will feed two families, $54 three families, $72 four families or whatever you can afford.

Please help NOW!!! It takes time to sort and pack the toys to get them to the Reservations. Don’t delay helping to make Christmas a special day for so many children at risk. Rush your toys to NAHA and let “Santa” deliver them so that every child has a gift to open on Christmas morning! Thank you for everything that you do and may I be the first to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!!!

Last year we were able to take 3 ½ semi loads of toys to the Reservations. Currently, we only have 1/4 of a tractor-trailer load – so we have a long way to go before Christmas!!
