NAHA Emergency Food Relief

NAHA’s donor-supported trucks are on the road every week traveling hundreds of miles to pick up and deliver nourishing food for hungry Native Americans on the Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Crow Creek, Lower Brulé, and Yankton Reservations.

It’s not surprising that hunger is an ever-present fact of life on the Sioux Reservations of South Dakota when you consider the reality of reservation life….

* Unemployment on the Reservations is over 70%.

* The poorest county in the U.S. is on the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation, with over 63% of the people living below the federal poverty line.

To meet the hunger crisis in “Indian Country,” NAHA delivers an average of 145,000  pounds of food to the Sioux Reservation communities every month.  For a more accurate accounting of the exact pounds of food delivered every month to Native American families, please refer to our NAHA Food Program Chart.

In addition, NAHA pays all the expenses of a soup kitchen for the homeless on the Rosebud Reservation, which was founded and operated entirely by Native Americans.

During Thanksgiving and Christmas, while most of America is enjoying festive holiday dinners, many Indian families go to bed hungry.  Several years ago, NAHA began purchasing turkeys for Indian families on the Rosebud Reservation and in Rapid City.

Once the truck is unloaded, the repackaging for Community Centers on the reservations begins

With enough donor support, NAHA hopes to provide over 10,000 Native Americans with turkey dinners in the next holiday season.
